While technically not a sleeping medication Benadryl is often used to aid in sleep. Believe or not some dogs suffer from insomnia. Luckily you can use Benadryl for dogs who won’t sleep helping the dog and yourself. and since Benadryl is an over-the-counter medication it’s relatively safe in almost all situations. It comes down to just getting the right dose, and using it for the right amount of time so you’re not putting your dog in any harm.
Can you really use Benadryl for dogs and won’t sleep?
As mentioned, you can safely use Benadryl to treat a multitude of symptoms in your puppy. If you have a nervous dog that won’t sleep, like the pace the house, Yeltsin whimper and just generally restless and trying Benadryl is certainly worth a shot. Just be aware that just like in humans sometimes Benadryl doesn’t help with sleep and has the opposite effect.
It might hide your dog up make it not only restless but hyper. That’s not exactly a recipe for a good time. But it never hurts to experiment and see if something as simple as Benadryl for your dogs insomnia can help.
How much should I use and how long can I use it for?
The general rule of thumb is that for every 1 pound your dog ways you can give them 1 mg of Benadryl. You can administer the medicine to three times per day and you can do that for a couple weeks without risking any serious side effect. If you continue medication longer than this to good idea to call your vet, and make sure there’s not something more serious going on. They may want to bring the dog in just like any Dr. which you bring your child you’re not getting unexpected results.
What causes dogs to be restless?
Very similar to humans there are many things cause the dog to be restless. Dogs are creatures of habit they thrive on routine, and that routine is broken you could send him into a tailspin of anxiety and nervousness. This is a much different than humans actually. Fortunately you can use Benadryl for dogs and can’t sleep and see good results in a lot of situations. Heck, I know adults who use Benadryl to sleep on a regular basis. If it works for them surely a work for little puppy.
Standard disclaimer applies, just like if you were to start your child on a new medication even if it was over-the-counter, I bet you would call a Dr. and at least check with the nurse and make sure there’s nothing to worry about. It’s always a good idea to give your vet’s office called just in case there’s something in your specifics dogs history that could cause them to have a reaction to Benadryl.
